October in Coorg is the month the monsoon hands over to the dry season. India Meteorological Department averages for Madikeri give it 211 mm of rain over about 12 rainy days, with days around 25 °C and nights around 17 °C. In return for a few wet days you get the greenest hills of the year, waterfalls still carrying the monsoon’s water, two of Kodagu’s biggest festivals and quiet roads before the winter crowds.

The figures here are IMD’s 1981–2010 averages for Madikeri, the district’s main weather station, about 36 km from Mokha Grove near Pollibetta. Treat them as a guide to the month, not a forecast for your weekend.

Is October a good time to visit Coorg?

Yes, for most trips. Karnataka Tourism puts the best time to visit Coorg at October to March, and October opens that window. It still rains, though: about 12 days in the month at Madikeri, against 4 in November and 1 in December.

So October suits travellers who want the green and the waterfalls and don’t mind a shower or two. If dry trails and cold, clear nights matter more, look at Coorg in November or December instead.

What is the weather like in Coorg in October?

Warm, humid and drying out as the month goes on.

Madikeri, IMD 1981–2010 September October November
Mean daily high 23.6 °C 25.0 °C 25.3 °C
Mean daily low 17.1 °C 16.9 °C 15.6 °C
Rainfall 275 mm 211 mm 71 mm
Rainy days about 16 about 12 about 4
Relative humidity 88% 83% 74%
Lowest on record 10.0 °C 10.6 °C 7.9 °C

The rain changes direction now. The south-west monsoon usually withdraws from Kodagu by the second week of September, and north-east monsoon showers follow from the first week of October to the second week of November, according to ICAR-CRIDA’s district plan. Expect warm days, some wet ones, and a month that gets drier towards the end.

What does October look like on a coffee estate?

After four months of monsoon, the estate is as green as it gets. The coffee berries that set in spring are filling out on the branches. Picking comes later: the Coffee Board of India gives November to January for Arabica and December to February for Robusta, which is most of what South Coorg grows. The Coorg coffee calendar goes through the year month by month.

Paths and jeep tracks stay damp early in the month, and travellers often mention leeches on Coorg’s forest trails after the rains. Wear closed shoes with some grip for the morning estate walk, and ask the hosts how the tracks are doing before you plan the jeep drive.

Are the waterfalls worth seeing in October?

Yes. After a monsoon that brings Madikeri about 2,700 mm of rain between June and September, the falls are still full in October, while the month’s own rain is a quarter of August’s. Two are within about an hour of the estate:

  • Iruppu Falls (about 44 km), a forest waterfall in the Brahmagiri hills south of Gonikoppal and Kutta. Of the big sights, it is the one that is genuinely closer to South Coorg.
  • Abbey Falls (about 42 km), in the coffee and spice country outside Madikeri.

Go in the morning, wear shoes you don’t mind getting wet, and keep to the marked paths and railings. Things to do near Pollibetta has drive times for both, and for the rest of South Coorg.

What is Kaveri Sankramana?

Kaveri Sankramana is one of the most important days of the year in Kodagu. It falls on 17 October, at the start of the month of Tula; in 2026 that is a Saturday. Thousands of pilgrims gather at Talakaveri, high on the Brahmagiri range where the Kaveri rises, for the Theerthodbhava: the appearance of holy water at the Brahma Kundike, the small tank at the source. The temple announces the time each year.

Many pilgrims also take a holy dip at Bhagamandala, the temple town below, and the Kaveri Jatre, a fair with food stalls and rides, runs alongside. In Kodava homes and temples it is a day of special pujas.

Talakaveri is about 61 km from the estate, or 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 45 by road. On the day, expect large crowds and slow traffic on the hill road: leave early, dress modestly and follow the temple’s arrangements.

What is Madikeri Dasara?

Madikeri, about 36 km from the estate, celebrates Dasara in its own way over the ten days of Navaratri and Vijayadashami. It begins with the Karagas of four Mariamma temples (Dandina Mariamma, Kanchi Kamakshamma, Kundurumotte Chowti Mariamma and Kote Mariamma), which go round the town from the first day of Navaratri.

It ends with the night most visitors come for: a procession of tall, lit mantapas from ten temples, each showing a story from Hindu mythology with moving figures, through the streets of Madikeri from Vijayadashami night until the next morning. In 2026, Vijayadashami falls on Tuesday 20 October in the central government’s holiday list. Check the Madikeri Dasara committee’s schedule for the procession night.

It is a late night and a crowded one. If you go from South Coorg, have a driver, or plan the drive back on dark hill roads with care.

How should you plan an October trip?

  • Book early for the long weekends. Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) and Dussehra (Tuesday 20 October in 2026) bring more traffic from Bengaluru and fill small stays quickly.
  • Drive in daylight. Bengaluru to the estate is about 233 km, usually 5 to 6 hours via Mysuru and Hunsur. The getting here page has routes and distances.
  • Leave room in the plan. With about 12 rainy days in the month, keep one outing a day and have a slow alternative ready.
  • Book safaris ahead. Nagarahole’s Nanachi gate is about 45 to 49 km away; slots and fees change.

What to pack

  • A rain jacket or umbrella, and quick-drying layers.
  • Closed walking shoes with grip, and a spare pair of socks.
  • A light fleece for the evening.
  • Insect repellent, for the paths and the falls.
