The best time to visit Coorg is October to March, when the hills are dry, green and cool. In India Meteorological Department records for Madikeri, December to February together average only about 25 mm of rain, against 952 mm in July alone. Each month has its own reason to go, though, from coffee blossom in spring to the monsoon’s full waterfalls.

Key takeaways

  • Driest months: December to February, about 25 mm of rain in all (IMD normals, Madikeri, 1981–2010).
  • Wettest month: July, 952 mm over about 27 rainy days.
  • Coffee blossom: February to April. Coffee harvest: November to February.
  • Clearest night skies: November to February.

The figures below are IMD’s long-term averages for Madikeri, the district’s main weather station. Mokha Grove sits near Pollibetta in South Coorg, about 36 km away, so treat them as a close guide rather than a promise for any single day.

When is the best time to visit Coorg?

October to March suits most trips. In IMD’s 1981–2010 normals for Madikeri, daytime highs from November to February sit between 25 and 28 °C, nights fall to 12 to 16 °C, and rain is rare. Karnataka Tourism also recommends October to March. Pick by what you want: coffee picking and cool nights in winter, blossom in early spring, empty roads and waterfalls in the monsoon.

June to August bring about three-quarters of Madikeri's 3,210 mm a year; December to February bring less than 1%.

How dry are Coorg’s winter months?

Very dry. Our reading of IMD’s normals for Madikeri: December, January and February together average 24.6 mm of rain, under 1% of the year’s 3,210 mm, with one or two rainy days across all three months. That’s why winter is the safest bet for a short trip, when a single washed-out day would hurt.

The trade-off is company. The Christmas to New Year week is Coorg’s busiest, as we explain in Coorg in December, and small stays book up weeks ahead. January and February are just as dry and noticeably quieter.

What is Coorg like in the monsoon?

Wet, green and quiet. The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kodagu in the first week of June and eases in the second week of September, according to ICAR-CRIDA’s district plan. In between, Madikeri averages 2,420 mm across June, July and August, with rain on 22 to 27 days a month.

It’s a good season for people who like rain on a tin roof, full waterfalls and empty viewpoints. It’s a harder season for long drives, treks and anyone who needs a sunny day. If you come, keep day trips short, carry rain gear and allow extra time on the ghat roads.

When can you see coffee blossom and the harvest?

Blossom comes in early spring and the harvest in winter. The Coffee Board of India gives February to March for Robusta blossom and March to April for Arabica, each set off by the first good pre-monsoon rain. Picking runs November to January for Arabica and December to February for Robusta.

South Coorg is mostly Robusta country, so around Pollibetta the blossom usually comes in February and March and picking runs from December into February. The flowers last only a few days and the dates move with the rain, which is why nobody can promise blossom on a given weekend. Our Coorg coffee calendar has the detail, month by month.

Which festivals fall in which month?

Three Kodava festivals shape the calendar:

  • Kailpodh, the festival of arms, in the first week of September, once the paddy is planted.
  • Kaveri Sankramana, on 17 October, when pilgrims gather at Talakaveri, the source of the Cauvery, about 61 km from the estate.
  • Huthri, the rice-harvest festival, in late November or December; the date is set each year. See our guide to Huthri.

These are family and temple occasions first. Visitors are welcome to watch at public events, quietly.

When should families and couples go?

For families, October to February works best: dry paths for walks, mild afternoons and evenings by the fire. Pack a warm layer for December and January, when Madikeri’s average nightly low is 12 to 13 °C. For couples, November to February adds the clearest skies for stargazing on the estate.

The monsoon has its own appeal for two: quiet roads, mist over the coffee and long breakfasts. Just pick a stay you’d be happy to spend a rainy afternoon in.
