Close to home

A hilltop church, close by.

A white church stands on a rise above the trees, with a statue of Christ outside and a grotto lit after dark.

“Ms. Liji is an exceptional cook. … The jeep drive through the coffee plantation and a visit to the church are both highly recommended.”

Ask the hosts for directions when you're here.

When to come

The year in Coorg, season by season.

Karnataka Tourism calls October to March the best time to visit.4 The coffee and the monsoon follow their own calendars.

Cool, dry season October–March; warmest weeks just before the rains, around May; south-west monsoon early June to mid-September; north-east showers October to mid-November; coffee blossom February–April; picking November–February. Published regional windows: the weather sets the real dates each year.

October – March

Cool and clear

The driest, most comfortable months. The north-east monsoon can bring showers until about the second week of November.5

Coffee picking runs through the middle of it: Arabica from November to January, Robusta from December to February.8

February – April

Blossom

After the first good pre-monsoon rain the coffee flowers white: in the family's words, coffee blossoms that perfume the air. The Coffee Board gives February–March for Robusta and March–April for Arabica.7

About 95% of the planted coffee in the Virajpet zone, which covers South Coorg, is Robusta,9 so around here the earlier window tends to matter more.

The coffee year, in detail.

April – May

Before the rains

The warmest weeks of the year come just before the monsoon, with the Arabica blossom and the backing showers that set the fruit.7

The suites have high-speed ceiling fans but no air conditioning.

Early June – mid-September

Monsoon

The south-west monsoon usually reaches Kodagu in the first week of June and eases by the second week of September.5 Kodagu averages about 2,725 mm of rain a year.6

It's when the waterfalls run fullest and the hills turn deep green4, and when roads are slower and trails are wet. Travellers report leeches on forest trails in the rains.10

Mokha Grove is open all year, and an inverter keeps the lights, fans and Wi-Fi on during power cuts.

The Kodava calendar

Festivals that belong to the district.

Kodagu's own festivals follow the farming year and the river. They are community and family occasions, and the hosts do not stage them for guests.

Kailpodh
Usually early September The festival of arms, held once the paddy has been transplanted.1311
Kaveri Sankramana
Usually mid-October Observed at Talakaveri, the source of the Cauvery.12
Puttari (Huttari)
Late November or early December, on a full moon The rice-harvest festival.11

Dates follow the Kodava calendar and change each year.
