The night sky over Coorg at New Year: what to look for

New Year’s Eve 2026 is a good night for stars in Coorg. The Moon is just past last quarter and doesn’t rise over South Coorg until about 1:13 am on 1 January, so the whole evening is dark. From about 7:30 pm you’ll see Orion climbing in the east, Sirius below it, the Pleiades almost overhead and, low in the south, Canopus. By midnight Jupiter is the brightest thing in the eastern sky.

All times here are calculated for Mokha Grove, a coffee estate near Pollibetta (12.24° N), and shift by only a minute or two anywhere in Coorg. Late December is also one of the clearest times of year: IMD averages for Madikeri give the month about one rainy day.

When does it get dark on 31 December?

  • Sunset: about 6:11 pm.
  • Fully dark (astronomical night): from about 7:27 pm.
  • Moonrise: about 1:13 am on 1 January 2027, a day past last quarter.

So there are nearly six hours of dark, moonless sky before midnight. Give your eyes 15 to 20 minutes away from lights to adjust, and use a red or very dim torch.

What can you see at 9 pm on New Year’s Eve?

Look What How high
East Orion: the three stars of the belt, red Betelgeuse above, blue-white Rigel below about halfway up
East-south-east Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky, below Orion about a third of the way up
Low in the south-south-east Canopus, the second-brightest star just above the trees
Overhead The Pleiades, a small tight cluster almost straight up
West Saturn, a steady golden point about halfway up

What’s in the sky at midnight?

As the year turns, the sky has rotated a long way:

  • Orion is almost straight overhead.
  • Sirius is high in the south, and Canopus sits about 25° above the southern horizon.
  • Jupiter has risen in the east and is now the brightest point in the sky, about a third of the way up. Binoculars held steady show up to four of its moons as tiny points in a line.
  • Mars, fainter and orange, is lower in the east, in Leo.
  • The Moon is still below the horizon, rising about an hour later.

Why can you see Canopus from Coorg?

Canopus lies so far south that it never rises for anyone north of about 37° N, which rules out Europe, Canada and the northern half of the US. Coorg is at about 12° N, so from here it clears the horizon on winter nights. It’s a bright, slightly yellowish star, low in the south. If the trees on your horizon allow it, it’s one of the best reasons to look south on New Year’s Eve.

When can you see the Quadrantid meteors in 2027?

The Quadrantids are the first big meteor shower of the year. In 2027 they peak on 4 January at around 03:30 to 05:50 UTC, according to Star Walk and other forecasts. That is about 9:00 to 11:20 am in India, in daylight, so you won’t see the peak itself.

The best chance from Coorg is the dark hour before dawn on 4 January:

  • From about 4:00 to 5:30 am, the shower’s radiant (in the north-east, near the Plough’s handle) climbs to about 30° high by 5 am.
  • The Moon is a thin crescent, 13% lit, rising at about 3:46 am, so it barely brightens the sky.
  • Dawn starts to wash out the sky from about 5:30 am, with sunrise at 6:48 am.

Rates before the peak are lower than the headline figures quoted for Europe, but a clear pre-dawn sky in South Coorg can still show a steady trickle. Lie back, look about halfway up rather than at the radiant, and give it half an hour.

How do you make the most of a night under Coorg’s sky?

  • Get away from lights. Even a few lamps on a path brighten the sky. Walk to the darkest corner of the lawn.
  • Wait for your eyes. It takes 15 to 20 minutes to see faint stars. Every look at a phone screen resets the clock, so turn its brightness right down.
  • Bring binoculars for the Pleiades, the Orion Nebula (the fuzzy patch in Orion’s sword) and Jupiter’s moons.
  • Dress for 13 °C. That’s December’s average low at Madikeri. You’ll feel it lying still on the grass.
  • Use an app to check names, then put it away.

At Mokha Grove the bonfire on the lawn is lit after dark, weather permitting, and the estate is a long way from town lights. From November to February the skies are at their clearest. Questions

Quick answers

Is Coorg good for stargazing?

Yes, especially from November to February, when the skies are clearest. Away from the towns, a coffee estate is dark enough to pick out Orion, the Pleiades and, through binoculars, the Orion Nebula.

When does the Moon rise on New Year's Eve 2026 in Coorg?

At about 1:13 am on 1 January 2027, calculated for an estate near Pollibetta. The Moon is just past last quarter, so the whole evening of 31 December is moonless.

Can you see Canopus from Coorg?

Yes. Canopus, the second-brightest star in the night sky, is too far south to rise for Europe or the northern US, but from Coorg it sits low in the south around midnight in late December, about 25° above the horizon.

When should I watch the Quadrantid meteors from Coorg in 2027?

Before dawn on 4 January 2027, from about 4:00 to 5:30 am. The shower's peak falls in daylight in India, so the hours before sunrise are the best chance, with the radiant climbing in the north-east.

Do I need a telescope?

No. Everything in this guide is visible to the naked eye. Binoculars add a lot for the Pleiades, the Orion Nebula and Jupiter's moons.
