A quiet family Christmas in Coorg comes down to three things: a small stay away from the busy towns, arriving before the year-end rush, and keeping the days simple. Late December is dry and cool, the coffee is being picked, and the evenings are made for a fire. There’s even a hilltop church near the estate with a grotto lit after dark.
This guide is written from Mokha Grove, a homestay with two suites on a coffee estate near Pollibetta in South Coorg, for families and couples only.
What is Christmas like in Coorg?
Quieter than New Year, and better weather than most of India gets in December. Days are bright and mild, nights are cool, and rain is rare: IMD averages for Madikeri give December about one rainy day. Kodagu has churches in its towns and villages, and Christmas is celebrated in its Christian communities.
The thing to plan around is the week after it. From Christmas to the first days of January, the roads from Bengaluru and Mysuru are busier, and small stays book out early. Arriving on the 23rd or 24th, rather than on the 26th, makes for an easier trip.
Is there a church near the estate?
Yes. Hilltop Church stands on a rise above the trees close to the estate. It’s a white church with a statue of Christ outside and a grotto that’s lit after dark, and guests have recommended the visit. The hosts can tell you the way and what’s planned for Christmas services.

A slow Christmas Eve and Christmas Day on a coffee estate
Christmas Eve
- Arrive after lunch. Check-in at Mokha Grove is from 1 PM. The estate is about 233 km from Bengaluru, 5 to 6 hours by road.
- Walk the paths while it’s light, then let the children loose on the lawn.
- Visit the church, if you’d like to, and see the grotto lit after dark.
- Dinner, if you’ve arranged it, then the bonfire on the lawn, weather permitting.
Christmas Day
- Coffee on the balcony first thing, from the kettle in your room.
- The guided estate walk, included in every stay. It’s harvest season (December to February for Robusta, according to the Coffee Board of India), so the bushes may be heavy with red cherries.
- An easy afternoon: table tennis on the veranda, carrom, the orchard, a nap.
- A quiet evening by the fire, with the stars out. December’s skies are some of the clearest of the year.
If you want a day out during the week, keep it short. Dubare Elephant Camp is 35 to 50 minutes away and Iruppu Falls about an hour. There’s more in things to do near Pollibetta.
Who is a Coorg Christmas on an estate for?
Families who want space and an early night, and couples who want the day to themselves. Mokha Grove takes families and couples only, with no stag, bachelor or party groups. There are two suites, so if you book one, the other goes to a family or a couple too, and there’s no party next door on Christmas night.
If you’re hoping for a big Christmas party with a DJ, a resort that runs festive events is a better fit.

Practical notes for Christmas week
- Book as early as you can. Small stays fill first, and Mokha Grove has only two suites. The hosts quote the seasonal rate on WhatsApp.
- Order dinner ahead. Breakfast is included; dinner is home-cooked local food, veg or non-veg, at extra cost and with prior notice. Tell the hosts about any dietary needs.
- Celebrating something? There are no fixed packages, but tell the hosts what the occasion is before you arrive and they’ll tell you what they can arrange.
- Bring layers. December’s average low at Madikeri is 13.2 °C, so evenings outside call for a jacket.
- Leave the dog at home. Guests’ pets aren’t allowed; Cooper, the hosts’ German Shepherd, lives on the estate.
