A good two-night weekend in South Coorg from Bengaluru is a slow one: leave early on day one, spend the second day on one outing (Nagarahole, Iruppu Falls or Dubare), and save the last morning for the estate. Most two-day Coorg plans online are built around Madikeri in the north. This one starts from the coffee country near Pollibetta, where the drives are short and the evenings are quiet.

Distances are by road from Mokha Grove, a homestay with two suites on a coffee estate near Pollibetta, and are approximate.

How do you get to South Coorg from Bengaluru?

  • The route: Bengaluru to Mysuru on the expressway, then Hunsur and on into South Kodagu. It’s about 233 km, usually 5 to 6 hours.
  • When to leave: early. Leave Bengaluru at about 7 am and you’ll arrive around lunchtime, after a break near Mysuru. Check-in at Mokha Grove is from 1 PM.
  • Without a car: KSRTC buses from Bengaluru stop at Virajpet and Gonikoppal, about 13 to 14 km from the estate. Message the hosts about the last stretch.

Day 1: arrive and slow down

  • Lunch on the way, around Mysuru or Hunsur.
  • Arrive and settle in. Take the afternoon off: the balcony, the lawn, a walk along the estate paths.
  • Evening: dinner on the estate if you’ve ordered it ahead (home-cooked, at extra cost, with prior notice), then the bonfire on the lawn, weather permitting.

Keep the first day empty. After a five-hour drive, the estate is the point.

Day 2: one outing, chosen well

Start with the guided estate walk after breakfast, included in every stay. Then pick one of these:

Outing From the estate Good for
Nagarahole (Nanachi gate, near Kutta) about 49 km, about 1 h A forest safari. Book ahead; slots and fees change.
Iruppu Falls about 44 km, 55 min to 1 h 15 A forest waterfall in the Brahmagiri hills, with a short walk in.
Dubare Elephant Camp about 27 km, 35 to 50 min Elephants on the banks of the Cauvery. Check the timings.
Namdroling Monastery, Bylakuppe about 44 km, 55 min to 1 h 15 The Golden Temple, in one of India’s largest Tibetan settlements.
Madikeri and Raja’s Seat about 36 km, 45 min to 1 h The hill town and its sunset viewpoint.

For a couple, Iruppu or Raja’s Seat; with children, Dubare. Be back before dark: the roads are narrow and winding, and the evening on the estate is worth being there for.

On the way back, Virajpet is about 20 to 25 minutes from the estate and has the Coorg Honey and Wax Producers’ Co-operative Society, founded in 1936 and described as India’s first honey producers’ co-operative. It’s a good place to buy local honey.

Day 3: a slow morning, then home

  • Coffee on the balcony and a long breakfast.
  • A last walk around the estate, or the orchard and the pond.
  • Check out by 12 PM and head back via Hunsur and Mysuru, in time to miss the worst of the evening traffic into Bengaluru.

When is the best time for a Coorg weekend?

October to March is the easiest window, cool and dry according to Karnataka Tourism. In December, IMD averages for Madikeri give a mean daily low of 13.2 °C, so bring a jacket for the evenings. The Coorg in December guide has the detail.

Two things to plan around:

  • Holiday weeks (Christmas to New Year, and long weekends) mean busier roads and stays that book out early.
  • The monsoon (roughly June to September) is beautiful but wet, with slower roads and leeches on forest trails.

Who is this weekend for?

Couples who want two nights away without long drives every day, and families who’d rather spend the weekend outside than in the car. Mokha Grove hosts families and couples only, with no stag, bachelor or party groups. There are two suites, so a weekend there is a quiet one by design. To check dates, message the hosts. The things to do near Pollibetta guide has more ideas if you can stay a third night.
